Optimization and variational principles for the shear strength reduction method

In this paper, a modified shear strength reduction method (MSSR) and its optimization variant (OPT-MSSR) are suggested. The idea of MSSR is to approximate the standard be more stable rigorous from numerical point view. consists simplified associated elasto-plastic model completed by depending on dilatancy angle. Three Davis' modifications suggested Tschuchnigg et al. (2015) interpreted as special cases their factors safety compared. OPT-MSSR derived basis rigid plastic assumption, similarly in limit analysis. Using variational approach, duality between static kinematic principles shown. solution OPT-MSRR obtained performing regularization combination with finite element method, mesh adaptivity damped Newton method. In-house codes (Matlab) used for implementation concept. Finally, two slope stability problems considered, one which follows analysis real slope. softwares packages Plaxis Comsol Multiphysics comparison results.
